South African Department of Home Affairs ( offline

The South African Department of Home Affairs’ website appears to have been offline for most of the week.  Today, Saturday, it’s still not up and running.

Does anybody have any ideas?

I was in Bangkok last month for the Bangkok Hat, an Ultimate tournament.  I took the liberty of applying for a new passport there, seeing as how I haven’t seen eye-to-eye with the consulate in Kuala Lumpur.

That was a good month and a half ago.

“4 to 6 months,” said the person who replied me via email there.  Not weeks, months.  She made very sure I understood that it would take months. She was obviously not exagerating.

The application process at the Bangkok embassy was fairly straight forward – the lady helping behind the counter was very friendly. I had to do my own finger prints and dirtied up their shiny, white counter a bit, but otherwise it was smooth.

So I’ve been checking online to see when I will appear in the system.  Last week it still said “no application on record”. This week I couldn’t even reach the website.

I’ve read that the DHA is undergoing some upgrades of their system and that apparently the backlog of applications would have been cleared by now.  Not sure if that was ID book applications or passport applications – either way, news is not very forthcoming.

So hopefully next week will bring some answers. My emails to various people have also gone unanswered.

Hi Angelina, this is NOT the Department of Home Affairs, so unfortunately I can’t help you with anything.

But, click on this link ->

It will take you to the actual Department of Home Affairs’ page where you can check the progress of your ID. Hope that’s helpful.

    Good luck.
