Earthrace visits Kota Kinabalu

We had a pretty funky visitor today in Sutera Harbour. A boat by the name of Earthrace sailed into the Marina this afternoon, dragging behind it a limp wing. It’s a super-futuristically designed boat and it’s aim is to circumnavigate the world in record time using bio-diesel.

I’m not a very big fan of bio-diesel as I’m not convinced that it’s as good for the environment as it is for the pockets of those who jumped on the bio-diesel band wagon.

But that aside, the ship looked cool. I got roped into organising the thing, well, the reception, food, landing rights for the heli, berthing space for the boat, after a local yacht handler got contacted to assist them to find a resting place. I still feel duped by that whole process, but I’m not one to bitch and moan.

So there she was, like the head of a fox peeking out above the water, this silver, streamlined ship that can cut through waves and travel some ridiculous distance on one tank of bio-fuel.

Anyway, they never did break the record as the ship had too much mechanical problems, but I guess in one respect they were quite successful and that was to make the world aware of bio-fuel. Now they’re doing the PR circuit in Europe and it’s apparently all going well, swimmingly.

Earthrace - It’s all about looking cool while breaking records
