I have been exposed.
At The Restaurant there is one particular waitress who always catch my eye. She’s tall, beautiful, always smiling and looks like fun. But, alas, her English is as good as my Chinese, so fantasise is as much as I’ve done.
Last night on my way out of The Restaurant, I had SMS’ed Tina to ask if the unknown-to-me man waiting there was this girl’s boyfriend. Tina had confirmed that it wasn’t and that she was in fact currently single.
At lunch with Tina this afternoon we had discussed relationships in general and, of course, The Waitress. I said I was interested sure, but from my exprience with The Ex and our language differences, I know it’s no easy path to follow. Upon parting after lunch, Tina said she would help…
So, earlier this evening, after my usual type of Sunday, I was at The Restaurant sipping some wine with Wang, celebrating the good weekend The Restaurant had notched up. We sat shooting the breeze until it was closing time Wang called over The Waitress. To my shock and horror, he asked her to sit down, poured her a glass of wine, asked her to toast me and left. Bastard.
So I sat there in awkward silence, staring into her eyes. The staring part was not all the unpleasant, but the whole setup was wholy unintended. I spoke a few Chinese words from my limited vocabularly, none of which can really form a coherent sentence. I could see she was also uncomfortable, so I asked Tina to tell her she could go back to work. As she excused herself I nodded, feeling the embarresment glow in the red of my ears. I downded the rest of my wine.
She left before I did, sparing me the awkwardness of having to face her again.
Shot, self, foot? Perhaps.
